Geography in Key Stage 1

image

During Key Stage 1 pupils develop their knowledge about the world, the United Kingdom and their locality. They are taught subject-specific vocabulary relating to human and physical geography and are encouraged to use geographical skills. They will look at geographical similarities and differences through investigating their local area and a contrasting area abroad, finding out about the environment in both areas and the people who live there. Children will identify seasonal and daily weather patterns in the United Kingdom and the location of hot and cold areas of the world. They will learn about the Equator and the North and South Poles and ask geographical questions about people, places and environments, and use geographical skills and resources such as maps and photographs. In class they will use world maps, atlases and globes to identify the United Kingdom and its countries, as well as the countries, continents and oceans studied at this key stage. Children will use simple compass directions as well as locational and directional language to describe the location of features and routes on a map.
